Cherry (1953) – studies with dichotic listening Task: Two messages, one in each ear – Listen to and repeat out loud one of the messages. Results: People could ignore other ear and repeat ear they focused on. Knew very little about other message in other ear. Q: What determines when we select information to ignore and attend to? Research on Dichotic Listening Task
Broadbent’s (1958) Filter Theory- Information is registered and stored in a sensory buffer. Filter selectively allows some info through for further processing. Remainder decays. Simple sensory property (location of ear) determines which moves on for further processing. Once selected, info goes through filter, ONLY THEN analyzed for meaning. Early Selection Models- Broadbent
Treisman’s Attenuation Model – variation on Broadbent’s. Assumes that small amount of info gets through filter, but in weakened form. (Broadbent’s original model assumed that info in sensory buffer was rapidly lost) Alternative? Early Selection - Treisman
Selection of which info moves on occurs later in processing. (After, processed some) Information is analyzed for meaning (but at largely unconscious level), and if meaningful, then passed onwards for further processing. BUT Johnston & Heins (1978) argued both early and late selection models too inflexible. May be an early mode and a late mode. Late Selection Model
Perceptual mechanism mostly passive (Lavie & Tsai, 1994). Some information perceived is “selected out” because there are not enough resources to attend to it. High perceptual load – lots of info coming in at once (loud party, restaurant, battlefield, etc.) Low perceptual load – might attend to irrelevant
