Using Fundamental Identities, Verifying Trigonometric Identities, and Solving Trigonometric EquationsThe fundamental identities can be used to do the following:1. Evaluate trigonometric functions.2. Simplify trigonometric expressions. One of the most commonly used methods when simplifyingtrigonometric expressions is factoring. Adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominatorsis also used frequently.3. Develop additional trigonometric identities.4. Solve trigonometric equations.Verifying Trigonometric IdentitiesTo verify a trigonometric identity, use the following guidelines:1. Work with one side of the equation. It is often better to work with the more complicated side.2. Look for opportunities to factor an expression, add fractions, square a binomial, or create a monomialdenominator.3. Look for opportunities to use the fundamental identities. Keep in mind which functions are in the finalexpression you want. Sines and cosines pair up well, as do secants and tangents, and cosecants and cotangents.
