Answer the following short questions using one or two sentences and appropriate equations if needed. (5) a) What is the fundamental assumption of thermal physics? (5) b) What is the Boltzmann factor? In what context does one use it? (5) c) What is the expression for the thermodynamic identity? Give the physical meaning of each of the terms in the expression. (5) d) Under what conditions can one approximate a collection of identical quantum particles to be a classical ideal gas? (30) 2. Consider a system in thermal equilibrium at temperature τ . The system has only 3 possible quantum states of energy: - ε , 0, and ε , respectively.
