Massey Denton Reading Reflection Douglas Massey and Nancy Denton show the disturbing treatment of blacks in cities in their book, American Apartheid . Massey connects how the persistent poverty that African Americans are in is explained by the segregation they experience in American cities through zoning and other racial motivated means. The black ghetto was created by whites deliberately for the first half of the twentieth century all as a way to segregate the growing African American populations in the cities. Even after the Fair Housing Act of 1968, segregation blocks blacks from climbing the economic ladder and keeps them in a perpetual state of poverty. The state is worsened by every economic downturn and produces an underclass of African Americans who must survive the deterioration of their social and economic livelihood.
