05/11/2007 00:47:00 English 119 Chris Coggin October 22, 2007 Essay #2 Coggin 1 Wal-Mart Affecting the Environment It was reported that Wal-Mart gained a net income of over $11 Billion dollars last year alone. The pattern that is being seen with Wal-Mart is they take and take, but giving back doesn’t seem vary evident. One of the main things I cannot understand is how can one company can ignore the impact they put forth on a community; Wal-Mart hurts other businesses when it comes to town, and they destroy the environment, among other things. Some people get excited when a Wal-Mart comes to their community, but what they do not realize is the underlining fact of how they are hurting the community. The majority of the small towns Wal-Mart opens in lose business for the small businesses that were there before them. Wal-Mart is harming many of the downtowns and locally owned businesses across the United States, and contributes to sprawl by building on undeveloped land on the outskirts of town centers. They found, by locating their stores in or near small town communities, they would quickly become the dominating store in that certain area. If you think
