Names, Terms, Dates -Christian world found unity under pope in 1439 under Brunelleschi’s dome. Pico De Mirandola- Not a Florentine, but able to survive because of the Medici. -Very intellectual man. 1414-18 Council of Constance - Final spiritual authority rested on a Christian council. Not just the pope. -Council of Constance sat down to heal problems. They elected the pope. Cardinals previously elected the pope. -For the first time in 50 years, Europe was one Christian Europe that all obeyed under one pope. -Council of Constance shaped hope to counciliar means of rule. -Popes were reluctant to call council because they challenged papal authority. 1431-39 Council of Basel-Ferrara-Florence -Counciliarist’s in Basel forced the pope into council. -Counciliarist’s wanted to make council a regular event. -Division between a Latin west and a Greek east. -Council moves from Basel(German Venue) to Ferrara(Italian Venue).
