Rurik Mendoza April 2, 2019 Biography on Lord Selkirk Lord Selkirk was the 5 th Earl of Selkirk, and is known as Thomas Douglas. Douglas was born on June 1771 on St Mary’s Isle. His father, Dunbar Douglas was the 4 th Earl of Selkirk. Thomas Douglas was the 7 th son of Dunbar Douglas, and he unexpectedly became the Earl of Selkirk after his father past away. Thomas Douglas went to education at the University of Edinburgh, where he studied to become a lawyer. While he was there, he saw poor Scottish farmers. Douglas wanted to help these people, so he used the money from his Selkirk inheritance and political connections to purchase land in Belfast, Prince Edward Island, and Baldoon, Upper Canada for the poor Scottish farmers, in 1803. To continue his work in settling these Scottish farmers, Douglas asked the British government for land in the Red River Valley. The government refused, since Hudson Bay Company owned that land.
