Lecture 5 — States on PT and PV diagrams It’s easier to visualize slices of the PV T surface. PT , PV , and VT diagrams. Each have their uses. PV diagram A projection of the full PV T diagram onto the PV plane. (“Look down the T axis with one eye closed.”) (sketch) Useful when we want to focus on controlling P and the response in V at Fxed T . ±eatures visible in the PV diagram include: Solid, liquid, gas phases, easily identiFable from their di f erent molar volumes. Transitions between phases: sublimation; melting; boiling. Tie lines connecting coexisting phases with di f erent V at the same P . Triple point, at which three phases coexist. Critical point, at which coexisting liquid and gas phases become identical (same V ). Isotherms, along which liquid compresses a little as P increases, and gas compresses a lot. Special isotherm at T c , with in²ection point. PT
