Lab 106 - Static and Kinetic Frictions Introduction : The objective of this lab is to measure the static and kinetic frictional forces using a force sensor. Also, to measure the coefficients of static friction and kinetic friction between surfaces. These forces will be analyzed using a free-body-diagram (FBD), along with experimentally verifying predictions of static kinetic forces Whenever the surface of a body slides over another, each body exerts a frictional force on the other which is parallel to the surfaces. Suppose a block is at rest, then an applied force is created which will cause the static frictional force to increase and soon balancing out the applied force until the object starts sliding. The maximum static friction is reached right before the object starts moving. Said relationship between the peak static friction and normal force is F smax = ( µ s)( F n). Experimental Procedure : Part I. Open the computer program labeled ‘lab 106’ for the experiment which will help with recording data.
