PSYCH 28/11/2006 14:07:00 Depressive Disorders Most likely to suffer from (15-18 percent) Depression is debilitating Onset, course, and gender o Can set in in early childhood but we can’t diagnose it because they  can’t describe their feelings or know they aren’t feeling well o For most it sets in late adolescence and early adulthood o Women are twice and in some cases three times as likely to suffer  from depression, which causes debate over the social role of women o Best explanation is a physiological explanation with hormonal and  neurotransmitter problems that tend to begin around puberty when the  hormones set in The Disorders o Major Depressive Disorder Lasts for weeks at a time, makes you not function well socially  and physically o Dysthymia Mild, but very consistent form of depression Always very unhappy, no very serious symptoms and  sometimes don’t get treated o Postpartum Depression Depression after giving birth Brooke Shields even had trouble holding her child and had  terrible sobs and was afraid to be a lone and even considered  suicide o Seasonal Affective Disorder Fall or winter is when it sets in due to decreased levels of bright
