CHEM TEST 1. CHAPTER 1 DEFINITIONS o Kinetic-molecular theory- helps interpret the properties of solids, liquids, and gases. According to this theory, all matter consists of extremely tiny particles. o Kinetic Energy- energy of motion of particles o Macroscopic- where experiments and observations take place. o Submicroscopic or particulate- atoms and particles o Mixture Heterogeneous mixture- uneven texture of the material (chicken noodle soup) Homogeneous mixture- consists of two or more substance in the same phase. o Solutions- Homogeneous mixtures o Elements- substances that are composed of only one type of atom. o Atom- the smallest particle of an element that retains the characteristic chemical properties of that element. o Chemical Bond- pure substance like sugar, salt, or water, which is composed of two or more different elements held together. o Chemical compound- substance produced by a chemical bond o Molecules- the smallest discrete units that retain the composition and chemical characteristics of the compound.
