Topic 4 DQ 2 Compare and contrast two change theories, and determine which theory makes the most sense for implementing your specific EBP project. Why? Has your mentor used either theory, and to what result? COPD, the population the author is using in the evidence-based proposal for this class, is a complex disease that requires patient-focused interventions and care. As such, when choosing a model of care, to propose a change in how these patients are educated and provided continuity of care, the author felt that Lewitt’s Change Theory (1958) would work best. Since behavioral modification such as coping skills, learning breathing techniques during exacerbations, stress, dyspnea management, diet, exercise, and the importance of smoking cessation is a large factor in improving the quality of life and controlling the symptoms of patients within this population (Cline, Castaniere, & Tonelli, 2017). Lippett’s Change Theory (1958) expands on Lewin’s Change Theory (1951) by taking the three-steps outlined by Lewin and expanding the steps as well as improving the process through seven steps. These steps include 1) observe the area of question (i.e., the hospital where the author works) and identify a problem; 2) assess the patients’ that would benefit from the change, their motivation and whether they are able to change; 3) look at the patient’s motivation and whether they have what they need to commit to the change (i.e., learning more about their disease process, the
