Notes 2: Modules 3-5MODULE 3Ch. 5 Improving and Assessing the Quality of Behavioral Measurement-It is very important for measurements to be valid. Validity has three important elements:1. Directly measuring a socially significant behavior 2. Measure a aspect of the behavior relating to the question 3. It ensures that the data is representative. Accuracy and reliability are also two key components of trustworthy measurements. Indirect measurement is a threat to validity because is requires interferences. There are several things that can happen or be done wrong to cause threats to validity of data. Things such as: human error, poor measurement systems, inadequate observer training, and more. We need to take the right steps to ensure the accuracy and reliability of measurement. There are four purposes of accuracy assessment that can be found on pages 109-110. -Interobserver Agreement is the most commonly used measurement in ABA. This requires two or more independent observers to report data for the same events. There are several techniques and formulas for IOA and they can be found starting on page 113.Ch. 6-ABA documents and quantifies behavior change by data. Graphic displays are simple visuals to help display relationships between measurements and show us the data taken.Graphic display provides benefits such as: immediate access to records of the behavior, provides judgmental aids, it’s a conservative method to use, and its and effective source of feedback. There are several different types of graphs that are used in ABA. I have highlighted each type of graph and their importance in the book. It is important to understand the type of graph you are looking at before trying to interpret the data beingshown. Mean, median, modes, and trend lines are all important components to a graph along with much more. Branch Article-About signifiance testing-It can limit the reasons for doing experiments, reduce scientific responsibility, and emphasize population parameters at the expense of behavior. -Its an ancillary aspect of a set of data, and therefore should play a relatively minor role inadvancing a science of behaviorDavison Article-Statistical interference-Nonparametric statistics should be used to provide a conservative playing fieldHopkins Article-Researchers are recommending that ABA use inferential statistics when making decisionsabout effects of IV’s on DV’s-Inferential statistics are shown to be objective
-Authors are asked to justify inferential statistics when they wish to publish results of them as a means for helping as how they may be helpful.Kazdin Article-Interobserver agreement can also be defines as « reliability » -IOA data is when you observe two or more independent sets of data-This article contains a bunch of reviews of characteristics of IOAPeterson Article-Independent variables are more important than we think and that is why its important to have accurate independent variables and having inaccurate IV may threaten the reliability and validity of research data.
