What is Identity? How are Identities Formed? Identity is central for understanding both our independence from and relations to the rest of the social world: our role, our meaning, our value and agency Theories of identity can be clustered around either: essentialism or social constructivism Essentialism – often biologically deterministic theories about a stable, ‘natural’ and unchanging meaning of the self that exists outside of politics, culture, and the social Social constructivism – suggest identity production as a process that is not natural or stable, but changing, cultural and political; often emphasizes power relations
