SOC 202 Concept Overview for Critical Analysis Paper Please note that the overviews below are not exhaustive or detailed enough to form the basis of your written work. We will be reviewing each of these in much more detail in the readings and lectures to come. Moral Panic : refers to the periodic mass fascination with a condition, person or group that is seen to threaten broader social values and interests. Mythologies : are a form of discourse (language/power) which connotes/is infused with meaning beyond the immediate object/idea signified. These are often politically motivated/infused. Hegemony: Is a term developed by Antonio Gramsci which refers to the system of values/beliefs/ideologies which are developed in order to stabilize a system of domination/exploitation. This occurs when the cultural system legitimizes existing structures and practices as natural, inevitable, or in the interest of all people. Counter-Hegemony: Is a term used to describe efforts to replace an existing hegemonic system by erecting a ‘new normal’. A counter-hegemony establishes new values, morals,
