Conceptualization Identify the ‘problem’ or objective of the film – what are they asking? Identify the overall message(s) of the film – what are they trying to argue? Identify relevant concepts Identify relevant research

Identifying the Problem The ‘problem’ is not always explicitly stated but it is always there Ask yourself what motivated this film? Is there an obvious question they are trying to answer? Are there multiple? If it isn’t explicit, try to think of what the filmmaker is trying to understand – think of the kinds of questions that are posed throughout the film. There may be more than one ‘problem’ addressed in the film – note them all for now Later you can choose just one to focus on

Identifying the Message Once you have identified the problem(s) try to identify the ‘thesis’ (or theses) of the piece What message does the filmmaker want you to take from their work?
