Karissa Lukes INQ 111 NELSON MANDELA Born in 1918 in what is now known as South Africa, Rolihlahla Mandela would grow up to change the world. He would grow up to lead a nation, grow up to change lives, and grow up to inspire many people in his lifetime. As Nelson Mandela was only one person, he managed to accomplish much more than anybody may have ever expected. Mandela himself stated, “There is no passion to be found playing small-in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living.” Mandela spoke for multiple causes including a classless society, was motivated through the struggle for freedom, and wanted to achieve freedom explicitly. According to red.org, the Nelson Mandela Foundation (founded in 1999) was [an organization] that focused on what was central to Mandela’s work, which included justice, dialogue, and social cohesion. Mandela also furthered the unbanning of the African National Congress (Clark pp. 79-81) as well as other African political organizations. Nelson Mandela, seen as one of the world’s most famous political prisoners, furthered the growth of much of his views to the world around him. Fittingly, Mandela’s African name Rolihlahla means ‘troublemaker.’ “Beginning in 1962, Mandela spent 27 years in prison for political offenses” (Biography.com Editors). He was arrested on treason charges only four years after starting South Africa’s first black law firm. However, before this, Mandela directed his campaign of peaceful and nonviolent protest against the Southern African government against its policies, specifically the race-based ones. These revolts lead to his temporary downfall whereas Mandela went to prison.

Mandela, according to Biography.com, lost his name and became Nelson due to the biased British educational system. As Mandela reached nine years old, his father died due to lung disease. Chief Jongintaba Dalindyebo adopted him as a favor to Mandela’s father, who recommended Jonintaba be made chief years prior.
