How do embryonic stem cells, somatic stem cells, and cord blood stem cells differ? Embryonic stem cells are pluripotent , derived from embryos, unspecialized but give rise to specialized cells, the process is called differentiation. Somatic stem cells (Adult stem cells) are multipotent , derived from tissues in an adult body, they can differentiate into cells from some, but not all, of the three germ layers. Cord Blood Stem cells are pluripotent that can give rise to any fetal or adult cell type. They are derived from the umbilical cord and placenta.

Stem Cell Applications Stem cells may remain quiescent (non-dividing) for long periods of time until they are activated by a normal need for more cells to maintain tissues, or by disease or tissue injury. Undifferentiated stem cells become the differentiated cells : Turning genes on and off Cancer and birth defects, are due to abnormal cell division and differentiation.

Stem Cell Applications Human stem cells are being used to test new drugs. Differentiation of stem cells into the specific cell type should be controlled. The most important potential application of human stem cells is the generation of cells and tissues that could be used for cell-based therapies.

Stem cells have great potential to treat a wide variety of human diseases and medical conditions. Stem cells, directed to differentiate into specific cell types, offer the possibility of a renewable source of replacement cells and tissues to treat diseases: macular degeneration, spinal cord injury, stroke, burns, heart disease, diabetes, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
