Mothers Against Driving Drunk (MADD) was founded, on September 5th, 1980, by Candy Lightner. Candy was motivated to start the organization after her daughter was killed by a drunk driver, days after he was released from jail; he had been incarcerated due to another drunk driving hit and run offense. MADD has become an organization with hundreds of local chapters and millions of members, all across the United States; many of MADD’s members have been personally impacted by drunk driving injuries and fatalities. MADD is involved in legislation efforts, public awareness and education, and assistance to victims of drunk driving. All of MADD’s efforts are geared towards the reduction, and ultimately elimination, of drunk driving.
