Intelligence 17/10/2006 14:12:00 Specific Ability Versus General Intelligence Intelligence is SEPARATE abilities in different parts of the brain General intelligence measures down to the speed at which your brain can  work o Speed of Neural Processing o Use of problem-solving strategies o Reaction time test is fairly good test of general intelligence  (correlates .7 with results on an intelligence test) Crystalized Versus Fluid Intelligence o Crystalized is things you know, rock hard, what you get from all of your  education, personal experience o Fluid intelligence is your ability to reason, solve a problem, put things  together in a new, creative way Fluid intelligence goes down as you get old, but your crystallized  intelligence can always be growing (which offsets the negative  effects of a declining fluid intel Social and Emotional Intelligence o Social is focused on knowing characteristics of others to get most out  of them o Emotional is understanding yourself so you can be most effective Ability to delay gratification, put off immediate reward, while you  work constructively on something else Marshmallow test, delayed gratification children had  WAY higher test scores Meaning of IQ scores o Benet made first IQ test to help struggling students o Next IQ test was formed for immigrants to identify “stupid immigrants”  and send them back Very hard to construct a “culture-free” test o Some grow up in minority sub cultures, exposed to different  information

o How do you develop a test? o Language is different from culture to culture, class to class o Test called progressive matricies(not rely on culture or language), it is  all reasoning Mental Retardation IQ less than 70 Inability to function independently in society Must have been labeled “retarded” before age 18, an individual who has  never been “not retarded” Genetic Causes o Genetic causes cause the worst retardation (below 30) o Down Syndrome (trisomy 21) Have many physical characteristics Asian eyes, flat nose, short in stature, small mouth, large  tongue Have extra chromosome 21 21 st  chromosome is also relevant for early development  of Alzheimers can now be detected early in pregnancy long needle into fetus, draw out few cells, cells can be  analyzed to determine (risky) simple blood test (determines 80% of cases in first  trimester o PKU (phenylketonuria) SEVERE RETARDATION (IQ 10-20)
