INTRODUCTION AND CONTROLLING STATEMENTThe idea of having only one true god amongst the 4,200 and counting religions does not seem probable. If there is only one true god, then the question for why so many religions are actively practiced is concerning. Every single person has a desire to want to know higher power, even if they said that they do not. Every person is searching for answers for purpose and longs to be noticed. Each person was created to long for answers; God placed it in humans since the beginning of time. People desperately want a response and knowledge. The problem is that there are so many options to choose from and it is hard to determine what is true especially since manyreligions are so closely related to what they believe. Nowadays it is very common to hear a person say that certain religions are very similar orare practically the same thing. A good example of this would be Christianity and Judaism, although the two are similar they are completely separated beliefs. The thing is how does one determine what is real versus what is not. 1 John 4:1 states, “Beloved, do not believe every spirit;but test the spirits to see whether they are from God; for many false prophets have gone out into the world” (NRSV).1Not implying that all religions are false prophets, a lot of them do hold truths in their beliefs that are not fully developed yet. This purpose of this paper is to evaluate Don Richardson’s Eternity in their Hearts. This paper will discuss the importance of understanding the different religions that are closely related, more insight on why people have such a desire to know more about a supreme being and the hopes that God has placed on every single person. The topics that will be covered are a summary of the book and discussing Tolkien’s true myth idea with Richardson’s book and other sources to show that Christianity is the true myth. SUMMARY1For the remainder of this paper, Bible verses will be used in NRSV unless stated otherwise. 1
The book Eternity in Their Hearts by Don Richardson is about one true god and different cultures. Richardson begins by talking about Athens, the plagues, and seeking help from a higherpower. He then talks about other people groups that are seeking higher power and compares these stories to stories in the Old Testament. Richardson implies that God made it to have the gospel ready for all cultures, but not every culture is prepared for the gospel. Many cultures that
