George Orwell's "Politics and the English Language"
Questions for Discussion

I agree with George Orwell when he says that language is not a natural growth. Language does not
develop naturally it develops with humans to fit our needs. Language could not develop by itself because
it needs the creator which uses it to develop it. However I do believe we shape our language for our own
purposes. In order to communicate with others we need to be able to refine our language so that others
can understand us as well.

George Orwell states that words should be used to give a clearer meaning but “modern writing at its
worst… consist in gumming together long strips of words which have already been set in order by
someone else, and making the results presentable by sheer humbug” (para. 12). Orwell is stating that
writers use this way of writing because it is easier. Not having to find words to use or worry about
rhyming may be easier but the writer is falsely passing their work as presentable. Mixed metaphors make
no sense and don’t paint an image in the readers or writers head. Orwell states the writer can simply open
