Berserk “Bonfire of Dreams” At one point in the series Berserk the main protagonist Guts’ ruminates his life and how now that he has those, he cares about he doesn’t believe he can change from his life of solitude and tragedy. The perspective of the speech is Casca, the protagonists tsundere love interest who has just treated his wounds and is listening to him speak. There are several different versions of this speech dependent on the version of Berserk, I used the 1997 dub to interpret. Guts’ character is one who whose whole life has been tragic, but the primary theme of the manga and story is how anyone can fight for their own destiny and against fate. As an infant his mother was most likely hung branded as a witch and he was born from her corpse in a pile of afterbirth on the roadside. From there is adopted by a mercenary camp leader and his prostitute/lover who take care of Guts until she dies of Syphilis. At the age of 4 he learned how to wield larger swords and at 8 was in his first battle where he killed his first man. His adopted
