Public Health and Aging AGE 422 Chapter 9: Family Caregiving of Older Adults 1. Demographic Transitions By 2030, the older adult population will increase from 13% to 20% Older adults with functional limitations will increase from 22 million to 38 million by 2030 There is an upward shift in people living longer with comorbidities and complex medical conditions There has been some changes throughout the years including: increase in chronic diseases that will need ongoing care management, technological advancements in healthcare, delay in nursing home placement, early hospital discharge, medical home care models focusing on the family, shortage in trained healthcare providers, and a desire to age at home 2. Defining Caregiving and Caregiver There is no precise number of family caregivers- largely due to how the term caregiver is defined and the duties they do Most family caregivers are female, provide care in their own home, have some college education, and provide more than 20 hours a week providing care Caregivers are typically middle-aged, but children from 8-18 (around 1.4 million) have also shown to provide care for an older adult o Typically seen more in low income households Most caregivers assist those with illnesses relating to old age, Alzheimer’s or dementia, cancer, mental/emotional illness, heart disease, and stroke 3.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
