NRS 490 Topic 1 DQ 2The Institute of Medicine has stated a goal that 90% of practice be evidence-based by 2020. According to HealthyPeople.gov, the United States is currently at approximately 15%. Discuss two barriers that might hold nursing practice from achieving this goal, and suggest ways in which identified barriers may be addressed. With less than a year to the 2020 timeline, it will be difficult to reach the goal of 90% evidenced-based practice (EBP) implementation that The Institute of Medicine has proposed with the current rate of implementation at 15%. According to Duquesne University (n.d.), evidence-based practice allows nurses to provide the best possible care to patients and is supported by research. Implementing Evidence-Based Practice into healthcare should be a priority and creates, “higher-quality, more affordable care, often stemming from lower rates of hospital infections, readmissions, and, in general, improved outcomes.” (MeInyk, 2016). Though EBP should be the standard, there are barriers to implementing new practice guidelines.
