Article Review One Introduction Sroufe, R., Liebowitz, J., & Sivasubramaniam, N. (2010). Are you a leader or a laggard? HR’s role in creating a sustainability culture. People and Strategy, 33 (1), 34-42. As more stakeholders are wanting more sustainable business practices, many firms are not moving quick enough to meet their demand. Sustainable practices allow companies to create social and environmental practices that promote collaborative efforts across different areas that will support the company financially. These practices are built upon competencies, and if these competencies are conducted correctly, it can highly motivate and engage employees. The goal of the study is to understand how organizations promote and incorporate sustainability initiatives and how HR practices influence a company’s ability to integrate on a myriad of emerging business practices focusing on sustainability. Being able to answer those questions allows for researchers to understand different sustainability integration activities, obstacles firms face and how to overcome obstacles, and steps that can be taken by HR to promote these activities. Methods To answer the research questions, the study design included an online survey of 76 executive firms in western Pennsylvania, northern West Virginia, and eastern Ohio. The online survey asked what types of sustainability initiatives the firms included and what role HR played in creating and implementing these activities. The sample pool consisted of HR personnel, operations, marketing and sales, and management. The online responses were then broken down into six categories including
