Public Health and Aging AGE 422 Chapter 16: Genomics and Aging 1. Breakdown of Genomics A genome is the full DNA sequence of an organism- aka entirety of one’s hereditary information o Once it’s sequenced, we receive a complete ordering of pairs on each chromosome o An SNP can be used to note genetic variations and see location of genes involved in disease, development, and aging The Common Disease-Common Variant (CDCV) hypothesis states that phenotypes that are common within the population are likely to be influenced by genetic variants with a similarly common frequency o Essentially, this mean that the genetic component of a common disease is associated with an allele variant that has to make up more than 5% of the population o Why does this matter? This theory helps lay the groundwork as to why someone may use fine gene mapping and genome-wide SNP to determine what aspects contribute to a particular disease Genomics has important implications for public health and aging o Greater focus on aging phenome or entire phenotypic representation of aging o Greater focus on a multifactorial cause for aging phenome o Greater focus on the public health value of disease-associated genotypes o Recognition of the potential for genetic information to change health risk behaviors

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
