The Journal of Nursing Administration, 42 (7/8), 383-385. doi: 10.1097/NNA.0b013e318261938b Introduction As the field of healthcare continues to change, nurses are having to take on more and more responsibilities. This makes the idea of nurses becoming leaders even more important. To make this a reality, this brings up two important questions: What motivates people to be leaders? And how are people best prepared for these leadership roles? Succession planning is a key player for identifying, educating, and training future nurses in leadership positions. This means that the nursing field and the overall healthcare field must ensure that there are leadership positions available and can be filled by nurses through succession planning. The article focuses on what succession planning is, who it needs to target, and why this type of planning is important for nursing leaders. Summary Succession planning involves identifying and preparing a potential candidate to file a new position. This type of planning “increases the likelihood of leadership continuity in managing operational costs, in ensuring the quality of care, and in meeting increasing regulatory requirements” (pg. 383).
