Considering the literary nonfiction element of theme, identify the theme(s) of each essay. Recall from the book that theme is not to be confused with the subject of an essay. Reference the strategies listed in the book, and use critical thinking to ascertain the overarching theme of each essay. In Pamela Colloff’s “The Innocent Man”, the theme is innocence. Michael Morton is being wrongfully accused of his wife’s murder. He continuously struggles to prove his innocence and goes into detail about all the obstacles he had to endure for almost 25 years before he was finally exonerated. Many flaws that are in the system were exposed, and he had to fight for DNA testing to be done. He eventually became a free man, but 25 years was already stolen from him.
