MEDIATION GROUND RULES 2 Mediation Ground Rules The first ground rule for solving conflicts is that issues must be handled at the earliest possible opportunity. The moment a problem arises, there should be an effort to resolve it as quickly as possible. Letting issues simmer for a very long time is likely to make resolution difficult. When people keep a problem, they develop resentment towards each other. Addressing issues promptly ensures that new problems do not emerge from the issue and that it does not spiral out of control. The second ground rule would be that the locus of control and accountability must always be in play in resolving conflicts. The first step to fixing a problem is acknowledging that there is a problem. When both parties recognize the problem, only then can an actual mediation process commence.
