Homework week 3 Extra Credit

Their environmental policy was officially to "conserve" environmental resources, but they want
rules to allow private individuals develop resources on public lands. They were promoting
similar policies regarding the development of Alaska. They also advocated for a greater federal
role (spend federal money) to "control" the Mississippi River and reduce the risks of flooding.
The platform with regards to labor was primarily focused on what today would be called "basic"
worker's protections. Goals included "limiting" the labor of women and children, protecting
employees in "dangerous" jobs, and to develop as system of Workmen' compensation. One of
the reasons to restrict immigration is to reduce competition on wages.
The purpose of preventing corporate contributions is to reduce the influence of corporate money
to "bribe" public official to support their preferred policies. Similarly, the disclosure of campaign
contributions is to allow the public to know who is financing (and implicitly controlling) the
election of public officials. Similarly, the development of the Civil Service was to prevent
politicians from rewarding supporters with government jobs.
The Republican corporate regulation was primarily focused on addressing and ending trusts and
monopolies that were excluding and preventing competitive commerce. They were advocating
more certainty (specifying the exact behaviors that would be prohibited). There was also
discussion about improving bank policies to prevent money scares.
The Republican Tax policy focuses on Tariffs to generate revenue, while protecting US
businesses from foreign competition. While some of the tariffs on particular goods may be too
high, any adjustments should take into account their effects on business....
