Carena Dudnath LIT 326 Assessment 2 Punishment in U.S. Literature Punishment occurs as a penalty of those who commit a crime or offense. They are subject to rough treatments, handling, and suffering based off of what actions they are being penalized for. There are many different forms of punishments that occur in the world. As the world develops and changes and continues to upgrade, so do the severity of the punishments as well. As technology continues to grow, so does the technology in creating punishments for those who deserve it in a sense. There are four ways in which punishment can be defined and Thomas Brooks defines that in his work of literature called Punishment . Punishment can be defined in four ways according to Brooks. “(1) Punishment must be for breaking the law” (Brooks, 1). You must go against the rules and regulations of the laws that are put in place in order for a punishment to occur. If you are simply not breaking the law and acting on your rights there should be no reason for a punishment to occur. “(2) Punishment must be of a person for breaking the law” (Brooks, 1). This means that you cannot administer a punishment if you are not an authority figure, meaning don’t take matters into your own hands. You may think you are doing the right thing but end up making it worse for yourself in the process. The authority figure must be the one to hand out the punishment for those breaking the law. “(4) Punishment must involve a loss” (Brooks, 2). Punishment must
