Radicals favored punishment, harsh reorganization and full citizens rights 1868 - Johnson impeached because he wanted to fire the Secretary of War, Stanley. He continued to hold office because he was not found guilty in trial by one vote. Election of 1868 and 1872: U.S. Grant elected, former Union general Black codes, laws restricting black freedom, put on by southern states
