In his 2010 analyses of Japanese manga's artistic style in the book "Manga: An Anthology of Global and Cultural Perspectives," Neil Cohn asserts that the illustrations in Japanese mangas are a form of visual language through which various concepts, expressions and moods can be communicated through visual symbols that are distinct from other visual languages used outside of Japan. Cohn contends that through the standard Japanese Visual Language (JVL) as used in Japanese manga illustrations and iconic visual symbols used around the world (eg. the smiley face), Japanese artistic approach is decodable by individuals despite their knowledge of Japanese language [ CITATION Nei10 \l 1033 ]. He also notes that although JVL is very unique on its own, its intelligibility is a result of visual inspirations from other countries such as France which further proves that many visual designs are iconic in multiple cultures. In his analyses, Cohn differentiates VLS from other visual languages again by claiming that imitating manga art styles can play a role in preventing a decline in children's ability to draw.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
