Wendy Bhagwandeen Module 3 Assignment 1. Part A: Explain the general premise and major elements of rational choice theory. Part B: How does Cornish and Clarke’s rational choice theory differ from deterrence theory? The general premise of the rational choice theory is that people are rational and want to maximize their pleasure and minimize their pain. Therefore, offenders chose to commit crime after weighing the costs and benefits. Cornish and Clarke’s rational choice theory differ from deterrence theory because they did not assume that people are fully rational. They believed offenders rational is constrained by the limits of time and ability and the availability of relevant information. Deterrence theories focus mainly on formal sanctions. Rational choice theory also recognizes the estimation of benefits more than deterrence theories. (Cullen, Agnew, & Wilcox, 2018) 2. Watch the video of the scene in the HBO movie “The Wire” from Module 2 (A) Describe how the decision to rob the drug house depicts the process of rational choice decision making as espoused by Cornish and Clarke. (B) Briefly address how the decision reflects the concept of “bounded rationality?”
