THE PRISON SYSTEM 2 In the democratic society that we live in today, we are always taught that while everyone is entitled to a life full of liberty as well as the pursuit of happiness, there are other people who do not deserve to be granted with similar rights to which all citizens are supposedly entitled. The exception in the society is usually grounded with a moral perspective that the people who are considered bad are those who break the laws are caught up in the justice system for the various offenses and this makes their freedoms to be taken away. Thus, we have been taught to believe and accept a continued existence of the prison system where the people who are regarded to as “bad” are usually sent away for isolation from the society to perform labor, to get punished and the greater outcome is usually to get reformed. As a result of this teaching, a few people are found to be willing to challenge the foundation of an institution such as prison systems and be able to question its legitimacy along analyzing the origins of such an institution. The main theme of the book is to challenge the society to confront the human rights catastrophe in our jails and prisons. Thesis: As the writer so convincingly argues, the contemporary U.S. practice of super- incarceration is closer to new age slavery than to any recognizable system of 'criminal justice’.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
