FA18 PSY 201 Section 3(9) Exam 2 Review Sheet Chapter 4 Definitions of consciousness o Awareness Sensory what your body is detecting from outside world , Cocktail Party Effect Direct inner thoughts, feelings o Freud’s levels 4 diff levels : consciousness (fully aware of), preconsciousness (not aware right now but can be if need to be), unconsciousness (can’t pull to mind), non consciousness (incapable of detecting) o Personal unity individual separate from environment and everybody around you o Waking state awake and aware of being awake Sleep o Biological- weeks, months, years and circadian rhythms - what goes on in 24 hours o Stages of sleep 4 major stages & then REM sleep Order 3rd and 4th stage is deep sleep Characteristics - 1 2 3 4 REM 3 2 1 - go through about 5 cycles per night Including wave frequency and amplitude - frequency tells you how many parts are working, amplitude tells you how much part are working together , 1st two stages of sleep have high higher frequencies and lower amplitudes , REM sleep has high frequency and low amplitude also o Functions- sleep as way of repairing yourself after a day, also a way for your brain to replenish itself, o Dreams Three main theories- 1) residue of the day- dreaming about things throughout the day that were on your mind, 2) unconscious?? , 3) activation synthesis- rapid neurons firing and brain trying to make sense “Why Do We Dream?” Video- WATCH THIS ON BLACKBOARD o Sleep disorders

Insomnia- not being able to fall asleep , narcolepsy- not being able to stay awake , and sleep apnea- stop breathing while asleep Deep sleep disorders- take place in stages 3 and 4 Sleep terrors- more vivid and intense than regular nightmares , bed wetting- no explanation , and sleep walking- doesn’t occur because of dreams Drugs o Use and use disorders - DONT WORRY ABOUT o Classes Depressants- decrease activity of the CNS Alcohol- stimulant in low doses, depressant in high doses Opiates - DONT WORRY ABOUT Barbiturates- DONT WORRY ABOUT Stimulants-
