Predictions American leaders predicted that a communist takeover in Vietnam would lead to a bloodbath of Saigon officials, landlords, and their families o Also expected to destroy the modern economy Communists predicted the opposite o No bloodbath, South would embrace reunification with North Both communists and Americans agreed that the repercussions of the Vietnam War would be huge o Domino Theory – if Vietnam falls, they’ll all fall o Whoever won it Vietnam – capitalism or communism would dominate the region o The ultimate beneficiary would be China if communism won Discrepancy No bloodbath in Vietnam since 1975, the real bloodbath was the war itself which killed 5-7% of the entire population o Since war, there have been no charges or accusations of massive, large-scale executions This is not to say the opposition was not treated brutally, it was – officers were executed. Disintegration of North and South Vietnam gave way to Hanoi being capital of Vietnam as a whole Northerners dominated the government and communist party
