1946-1954 – Vietnam and French fight Vietminh Domestic support Preached social revolution Solid rural base, pro-French groups were isolated in the country side Military o Better intelligence than French Vast spy network of Vietnamese workers working on French military bases o Excellent logistics despite lack of airport, little transport capabilities o Stronger commitment from communists fighters o Too few French troops, so recruited non-communist Vietnamese. These troops had little identification to the cause, were of little value to the French army. o Vietminh troops extremely motivated o French commander: “It’s certain that the great force of the Vietnamese lies in their conviction.” o Communist China began support with artillery, anti- aircraft guns, advanced automatic weapons o French tended to underestimate the enemy, exaggerated the defensibility of exposed flanks, ignored importance of rural intelligence and local militias o Not a whole lot of French government support
