Reflection Paper #1 Lani Martin Soc 493 Professor Colby 01/22/19 Ethnocentrism “…the view of things in which one’s own group is the center of everything and all others are scaled and rated with references to it…. Each group nourishes its own vanity, boasts itself superior, exalts its own divinities, and looks with contempt at outsiders” ((William G. Sumner (1906)) McIntyre p 52). Merriam-Webster defines it as “ the attitude that one's own group, ethnicity, or nationality is superior to others” So, as a hairdresser you wouldn’t think that this is something we see or witness very often, but you’d be surprised. Hairdressers are an entirely different breed of people. Our text states that “ethnocentrism…brings together people and builds solidarity within a particular society” (53). We, as hairdressers, feel that way about each other. It’s like we’re in this elite group that only allows other like-minded individuals and, if by chance, you want to become part of our team, it’s not just the education and skill you need to have, but also the personality to fit into our little family.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
