Lani Martin Soc 493 Spring 2019 Letter to Potential Employer To whom it may concern, Over the last 15 weeks I have been apart of an internship that has shown me how sociology plays a role in almost everything we do. I am a hairdresser by trade and a manager by appointment. I manage a team of 10 other people who rely on me to set the example and be a leader. I am expected to follow company policies like dress code and security regulations as well as making sure my team follows them. Sociology in its simplest terms is the study of how people function in society. Society can refer to work, family, school, church, culture or any number of other things. For the purpose of this letter it will refer to work, specifically my work and how my team, my guests and I function within it. There are two terms I want to start with, gemeinschaft and gesellschaft. As you can probably guess, they are German words, but that’s only relevant to the person who related them to sociology. What is relevant is what they mean to me and how I use them daily while interacting with others. Gesellschaft is a goal-driven social relationship. It’s a relationship you enter with the purpose of achieving something. For me, its to gain knowledge about my guests, their needs, wants and frustrations when it comes to their hair. I ask questions, listen to their responses and offer suggestions in order to reach their desired result. Another side to the goal-driven relationship concerns hiring new team members for my salon. I interview them not knowing anything about them except what their resume shows. I do not know if they have specific days or evenings they can or cannot work. I don’t know if they have children or a husband. All I do know is that they want a job and have applied to my salon.

The relationship, like so many relationships I initially encounter, is very goal oriented. I ask open-ended questions about their experience and history. I let them know that we are required to work evenings and weekends and ask if that will be a problem.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
