Catherine Lopez 3/25/19 Research Methods in Law and Society 225 Professor Grimsley Assignment 3 Deciding which court to visit was difficult for me because there were two important factors I had to consider. First, since I go to school and work, the time it would take to get there was significant. Second, I didn't want to sit there for 2 to 3 hours observing nothing. At first, I was going to visit Kings County Criminal Court, as it had to do with my research question but, at the end, I decided to go with Kings County Family Court. I believe observing something completely left field would help give me perspective. Also, having children involved creates a new environment which interest me. The family court system was implemented as a mechanism for the resolution of disputes involving domestic issues such as child support, divorce, and child custody. Its focus is family law and aimed at preventing emotional conflict or physical abuse for the child/children and or adults involved. After observing the court process in person, I’ve concluded that the court judges' expectations of respondents can, at times, be unreasonable and the courts “solutions” like imprisonment are far from solving anything and create further problems. Before I could enter the Kings County Courthouse I had to go through security. There was a long line of people outside waiting to get in. Most of the people on line were minorities and were with their immediate families like sister, or mother which was something I expected.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
