Catherine Lopez 5/21/19 PHI 326 Professor Pittman Arendt and Foucault It’s easy to think as Hannah Arendt and Michel Foucault as radically different philosophers but there’s a good deal of common ground between these two. Arendt’s argument over Totalitarian regime’s “movements” is similar to Foucault’s descriptions of punishment/discipline over the individual. In a way, subjectivity bridges these two. Arendt in her book “ The Origins of Totalitarianism ” analyses the genesis and effects of Totalitarianism. She explains the dangers of ideologies and of public organized distortions. To her, totalitarianism is defined by its emphasis on constant movement, which takes away the agency of individual men by making them just parts in a grand machine of history or nature. She argues totalitarianism applied terror to subjugate mass populations rather than just political adversaries. Arendt finds that its essence is terror and its purpose is to stamp out the spontaneity of the human spirit totally.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
