Catherine Lopez 4/4/19 PHI 203 Professor Pittman Assignment 2 Jean-Jacques Rousseau was an influential Genevan philosopher, writer and composer. His “Discourse on Inequality” is a cornerstone in modern politics. During his time, humanity was believed to have started as savage and violent, but Rousseau views were extremely unique. Before society, there was self-preservation and pity. To him, mankind, during the genesis of time, wouldn’t attack or inflict harm unless their own self-preservation is at risk. In other words, think of humans as selfish but nonconfrontational . Their primary concerns are at a basic level like food and sleep. They would only attack for their own preservation. They weren’t dictated by reason alone. Rousseau argued mankind was full of pity, and empathy which is vastly different from mankind in civilized society. We formed an unhealthy form of self-love, centered around pride. This emerged as we moved into society and begun to compare our self to one another. We initiated and competed for wealth and status.
