Kafer 1 Karl Kafer Westerfield English 101 7 December 2018 Final portfolio Reflective Cover Letter Dear Professor, Throughout my writing journey in English 101 there has been a lot of ups in downs as my progress as a writer. When I first came to Washington State my prowess as a writer would’ve been considered quite amateur as in high school, I did not learn a lot of the basic rules for writing rhetoric, and research essays. One of the things I struggled with most while writing was how to put my own personal voice into an essay and still have it contain an academic tone. I had learned stylistic techniques to help voice my opinion in essays by learning how to write to the correct audience. In personal essays like essay number two I had to write as if I was telling the story of my dear friend whom I had lost and what I had learned and taken away from the experience. While in essay 3 I was writing about research done on theories about how music can affect one negatively and adding my personal experience to help backup the supporting research in a more formal matter. After writing each of the essays it was apparent to me that my biggest strengths lied in my ability to write in a formal academic tone. I am best at using a formal tone when writing essays because it is easier for me to write from an unbiased perspective. For most of the papers we had written in class there was an informal tone that was required to write the paper effectively and because of the I struggled a lot with forming ideas and being able to put them down on paper. One of my biggest strengths as writer is also being able to formulate a purpose in my essays and thoroughly give context and support to whatever purpose or thesis I chose to write about. My biggest weaknesses lied in writing in ability to write in the first person and writing informally because I had never polished those skills prior to taking English 101. It was one of the hardest skills for me to polish given that the prompts required a substantial amount of personal voice and tone. While it was my biggest weakness it was also my biggest growing point, with each of the essays I had practiced new ways of creating my own voice in my essays without deteriorating the legitimacy of the paper. When choosing the essays for this portfolio it was very apparent that I had to choose essays 2, 3, and 4. Each of these essays had a direct correlation with each other, in essay 2 I delved into the topics of music and mental health and my person connection to how it had helped my friend Darian. In essay 3 I took a different view point on music and researched how it negatively affects teens and how it may have negatively affected the teens around me. Essay 4 I changed my narrative and looked at music opposite as I did in essay 3 and argued that music was in fact harmless to the teen mind. I Feel with each of these bodies of work it shows a progression of thought and skill throughout as I felt more and more confident when going on to write the next essay because of the plethora of information I had gathered on the topic. Choosing these essays
