Course Description
This course will focus on the development of critical thinking skills, college-level reading
and research, and self-directed study skills. Your assessment (points earned) will be
based upon various assignments and participation during class time, as well as online.
The successful completion of this class contributes to your overall success in Summer
Bridge with Professor Bacho ’s Humanities course .
Learning Objectives
In this INTRODUCTORY course, you will:
 Improve your understanding of the college student’s responsibility in the teaching
and learning process.
 Increase your knowledge about the critical thinking, reading and writing skills
needed for college level course work.
 Experience a positive adjustment in the university environment.
 Develop adaptive study skills for a variety of assignments and faculty
expectations.
 Learn to navigate the college system with the support of Student Services.
 Begin exploration of possible majors and career pathways.
 Increase awareness of personal and cultural learning styles and how to work with
other types of learning styles.

Required Texts
You MUST bring readings to class each day so that we can reference the material
together. This includes the books from Professor Bacho’s class when applicable.
All readings for this course are files located on CANVAS. You will need a computer,
printer and access to the internet to retrieve the readings and the assignments. If you
don’t have a printer, you can print on campus for free. You just need to provide your
own paper.
Course Structure
Class sessions include lectures, large and small group discussions, group activities, and
film viewing. There will be occasional in-class writing assignments and activities that
cannot be made up.
