Sanchez 1 Sabrina Sanchez Dr. Kelly Comp 2000 November 8, 2019 Misconceptions about Women in the Gym Introduction/Background In recent years, there have been an increase in the attention paid to women in the bodybuilding section of the gym as well as a rise in the interest in their competition. However, many fitness organizations have come under fire for their failure to include or promote female bodybuilding aspect of their competition. Take, for instance, the Arnold Sports Festival. In 2018, the organizers decided to drop the women segment (Alfonseca). The logic behind their decision was that female bodybuilding competition did not attract as much viewership as the male competition. As expected, they were sued by a female bodybuilder. What are the misconceptions held by people regarding female bodybuilding? Many people see physique as being an area that should be designated for males while female concentrate on other aspects such as bikini competitions. The assumption is that it is unnatural for women to have the muscles that come with bodybuilding. Such a physique is deemed to be appropriate on men but less so in women. The logic behind their reasoning is based on the fact that women are genetically unable to produce the same amount of testosterone as men; this is the hormone responsible for rapid muscle gain (Flager). The view held by many people is that the female body should be toned in a sexually attractive way rather than a bodybuilder, a sport associated with male. This mental

Sanchez 2 misconception drives people to the conclusion that women are best suited to do exercises such as yoga and cardio. Not taking away anything from these two forms of exercise, they serve a distinct category of people in a manner that bodybuilding does not. However, undertaking cardio is a way of burning fat and therefore losing muscles. To be competitive in the area, one needs to lift the weights. This applies to both genders, irrespective of their testosterone levels. Many fitness organizations have been guilty of promoting men bodybuilders but completely ignoring the women. Take, for instance, Crossfit. On their website, they publish videos of workout of the day (WOD). In the majority of these videos, it is the men who feature while women are ignored (Madlinger 2).
