CSCI Test 1 Vocabulary List Digital Media Analog-to-Digital Conversion- The conversion of analog signals into digital signals CD Ripping- Allows you to encode CDs into MP3 form Compression- Taking out ‘redundancies’ in a file to reduce the file size; Makes the file smaller and faster to send over the internet or save to a disk • MP3- A type of music file Encoding- Programs that encode convert MP3 files to varying levels of quality • Quicktime • WAV Format- Short for WAVE form audio format • WMV Format- Windows Media Audio Format Conversion Rendering Resolution- The clearness or sharpness of an image, which is controlled by the number of pixels displayed on the screen • Megapixels Sampling Rate- The number of times per second that a signal is measured and converted to a digital value; Sampling rates are measured by kilobytes per second Texturing Wireframe Model Software Utility Software- Small programs that perform many of the general housekeeping tasks for the computer, such as system maintenance and compression • Backup- A software application that crates a duplicate copy of selected data on the hard disk and copies it to another storage device • Disk Defragmenter- Utilities that regroup related pieces of files together on a hard disk, enabling faster retrieval of the data • Task Manager- A windows utility that shows programs currently running and permits you to exit nonresponsive programs when you click ‘End Task’ Application Software- The set of programs on a computer that allows the user to carry out tasks such as word processing, sending e-mail, balancing a budget, creating presentations, playing games, taking online classes, and editing photos • .NET Framework • Application Suite
