CHEMISTRY 111A, FALL 2019 Problem Set #10 Textbook problems: Chapter 3 problems 45, 47, 50, 51, 55, 60, 62, 68, 93, 102 Note: the central atom is underlined throughout this problem set. 3.45. Draw Lewis electron dot diagrams for: (a) AsH 3 (b) HOCl (c) KrF + (d) PO 2 Cl 2 ¯ 3.47. Urea has the chemical formula (H 2 N) C O (NH 2 ). The carbon atom is bonded to both nitrogen atoms and the oxygen atom. Draw a Lewis diagram for urea and use Table 3.6 to estimate its bond lengths. 3.50. White phosphorus (P 4 ) consists of four phosphorous atoms arranged at the corners of a tetrahedron. Draw the valence electrons on this structure to give a Lewis diagram that satisfies the octet rule. 3.51. Draw Lewis electron dot diagrams for the following species, indicating formal charges and resonance diagrams where applicable. (a) H 3 N BF 3 (b) H 3 C C O O (c) HOCO 2 3.55. Methyl isocyanate has the chemical formula H 3 C N C O. Draw its Lewis diagram, including resonance forms. (Note: The N atom is bonded to the two C atoms.) 3.60. Give the steric number, and sketch and name the approximate molecular geometry.
