THE LECTURE VIDEO WILL HAVE THE SIMPLIFIED EXPLANATIONS NECESSARY FOR THIS CHAPTER. Section 7.2 What is catabolism? Cellular breakdown of large molecules into smaller molecules, releasing energy. Bacteria breaking down complex organic food molecules from the environment Can only catabolize what our DNA encodes in our enzymes; starches, lipids, proteins but NOT cellulose or lignin How does ATP store energy? Forcing a phosphate with a diphosphate and that is a storage of energy Adenosine triphosphate Stores energy in the bonds formed by condensation of ADP with inorganic phosphate. Hydrolysis of these bonds yields energy Section 7.3 Be able to give an overview of what goes into glycolysis and the tricarboxylic acid cycle (TCA) and what comes out of these cycles (As seen in Figure 7.3 and 7.10)
